Beginner's Guide

Sometimes we get emails and calls from people who have downloaded and installed SecuBox, but are not able to figure out how to work with it. Despite the fact that they are usually quite experienced Windows Mobile users, they are simply not familiar with the "disk encryption" concept SecuBox exploits. So, here comes this small but comprehensive guide that aims at making our customers' life easier in the setup phase.

The main problem is that people are usually familiar with 'file-based' security - i.e. they would normally expect the data protection software to encrypt data file-by-file. This is indeed very simple, but not convenient enough as to make data encryption a life habit. Our natural goal is not providing you with a "just another security software" but offering you a solution that would serve you for many years and protect your sensitive and confidential information in a convenient and graceful manner.

As a result we took "on-the-fly disk encryption " approach. (Learn more about on-the-fly encryption here). This means that software will not encrypt every single file, but you will have one (or more) secure areas on your device. This secure area looks just like another storage card (SD card) in File Explorer of your Windows Mobile device. So, the same way as you would have saved or copied files onto your SD card, you save and copy sensitive files onto SecuBox secure card.

This Guide contains step-by-step instructions on how to create, mount, and use a SecuBox volume.

Step 1: Download, Install and Launch

Before you make your first SecuBox storage, make sure you have installed SecuBox on your device. First, define your device type (Pocket PC or Smartphone), then go to our Trial Download page and select the required .exe. of .cab file. Please, refer to the Installation instructions page if you are in doubt what to download.

After you have successfully installed SecuBox, launch it on your device by tapping Programs-> SecuBox.

Step2: Create a volume

1. Tap to Create new SecuBox storage
2. Define the location where you want to store your SecuBox container (either in the device memory or on the SD card)
3. Type SecuBox container file name e.g. secubox

Step 3: Define password

It can be difficult to choose a good password: the password should be fairly long and shouldn't be guessable, but at the same time it should be easy to remember.

To ease password selection procedure, and ensure it is as secure as possible, we have implemented the Password Strength Meter, which uses sophisticated methods to evaluate the quality of your password. Our advanced algorithms will help you create a strong encryption password to ensure that no one will be able to brute-force it and get access to the encrypted information.

After you have defined the password, SecuBox will create your new encrypted card. This can take a while, especially if you haven't selected Quick Create option.

Enter password that will be used to protect your data - this has to be a minimum 8-character password.

Step 4: Working with mounted SecuBox volume

You have just finished creating your first SecuBox virtual encrypted card. Your new SecuBox volume is now mounted. This storage now appears as a new storage card in your Windows Mobile File Explorer.

The SecuBox storage looks and feels just like another Windows Mobile storage card and you can save files there in the way you would do if it were a usual SD card. When you write files to SecuBox card, they are transparently encrypted. When you open documents from SecuBox card, they are automatically decrypted. SecuBox DOES NOT store any data in the unencrypted form.

Now you can move all your sensitive files to this SecuBox card, and work with them directly from SecuBox encrypted storage. After you finish work with data, don't forget to unmount it (you will find the Unmount button in the program window). You may also configure SecuBox to unmount secure Storage when the device goes into Sleep mode (via Settings menu).

Summary

To summarize, next time you would like to work with your secure files, you need to do the following:

1. Run SecuBox and tap Mount

2. Locate the secubox.asb file (or other if you have selected other name while creating)

3. Enter your password.

4. Open File Explorer and find the new SecuBox card to start working with the encrypted files stored there.

5. Once you finish your work, make SecuBox card inaccessible and invisible by tapping Storage->Unmount (or use SecuBox system tray icon to unmount). This will ensure that no one will be able to access your SecuBox card without knowing your password.
