How encryption works in Secubox for Pocket PC?

SecuBox for Pocket PC provides transparent "on-the-fly" encryption for your Pocket PC or Pocket PC Phones. You create virtual encrypted storages that appear on your Windows Mobile device as another Windows storage. Data encryption is performed automatically and transparently on-the-fly. You can do anything with SecuBox for Pocket PC encrypted storage that you can do with a normal Windows Mobile storage; only that with this encryption program, the encrypted volumes require password authentication before the protected data becomes accessible.

What is SecuBox volume:

Before you can encrypt data on Pocket PC or Windows Mobile Phone, you must first define a file that will be used to store the encrypted information in. This file is then mounted and appears like any other Windows Mobile storage card. Whenever you save information to this encrypted Windows storage card, it is automatically encrypted. Whenever you read information from this Windows Mobile storage card, it is automatically decrypted. The entire process is transparent to you.

You can create several virtual encrypted storage cards using this Pocket PC encryption software, each of them will be seen as a separate PDA storage card. Up to encrypted 10 storage cards can be mounted at the same time.

While creating the encrypted volume, the SecuBox software asks you to select the name and properties of the container file. Then it generates a random 256-bit key, encrypts it and appends this encryption key to the file. This encryption key is used to encrypt and decrypt your information while reading from and writing to the PDA storage card.

SecuBox password:

It is the password you type in when creating the encrypted volume that protects access to the encrypted information on Pocket PC. The encryption key itself is built from this password using SHA 512-bit algorithm (industry standard algorithm for strong key generation).

SecuBox provides Password Strength Meter which assists you in selecting your password. Password Strength Meter checks the password for complexity and against dictionaries. To decrease the chances of someone ever guessing your password,  select a hard-to-guess, or strong password. A strong encryption password must be as long as possible (never shorter than 8 characters), include mixed-case letters, include digits and punctuation marks, not be based on any personal information, not be based on any dictionary word, in any language. The Password Strength Meter will evaluate the quality of your password and will help you ensure your confidential information is properly protected.

Whenever you mount the storage on your Windows Mobile device, SecuBox encryption software asks you for your password. Once you enter the password, the secure storage is mounted and you are able to access the protected information on your PDA. Without your password, the encrypted data on your Windows Pocket PC looks like a jumble of meaningless characters and your data is completely inaccessible to any malicious user or anyone who wants to get access to your private data.

You can write files to this encrypted storage the same way as you would work with the usual Windows Mobile storage, only that all information that you write there is transparently encrypted using the strongest algorithm acknowledged today - AES 256-bit. We intentionally do not offer you the multitude of algorithms to choose from for the following two reasons:

  • all of them are weaker and less efficient and robust than AES 256-bit encryption algorithm;
  • we do not want to put any additional burden on you with useless algorithm selection procedures - just INSTALL and GET SECURE.

See how you will be able to protect your  Pocket PC data ...
